Island history

An island made by the inlet.

From dredging to day trips

Peanut Island was created in 1918 from material excavated for the Lake Worth Inlet. Its name came from a planned peanut-oil shipping terminal that never materialized. Continuing dredging expanded the island while its perimeter became a public recreation destination.

The JFK bunker

The historic bunker is a local landmark, but the county currently lists it as closed until further notice. Plan your visit around the beaches, paths and lagoon rather than access to the bunker.
