Know before you go

Small questions. Better island days.

Checked October 13, 2026 · Independent visitor guide

Can I drive to the island?

No. Reach the island by boat, water taxi, kayak or paddleboard. Drive to the mainland marina, not the park mailing address.

Are dogs welcome?

Dogs are allowed in designated areas and on the shuttle. Keep them leashed, clean up and bring water and shade. Campers are limited to two pets per site.

Can I bring alcohol?

No alcohol on the shuttle or in day-use park areas. County rules allow possession only in permitted camping areas; confirm your transport rules separately.

Is there food on the island?

No restaurants, vendors or gear rentals operate on the island. Pack lunch and water before boarding.

Can I fish?

Fishing is permitted in designated areas outside guarded swimming areas. A Florida saltwater license is required unless an exemption applies. Check FWC rules.

When do I need to leave?

The park’s day-use hours are sunrise to sunset, but this shuttle’s last return is 5 PM. Be in line early; do not use sunset as your boat deadline.

Is the JFK bunker open?

The county currently lists the historic bunker as closed until further notice.

Is swimming always guarded?

No. The county currently says swimming areas are unguarded during the week. Check local notices and supervise children closely.
